M. Rick Turner is a consultant and speaker on African-American student issues. Throughout over 40 years of professional experience, his life’s work has focused on African-American students at predominantly white institutions and on related issues including student recruitment, admission, retention, and graduation. He has worked effectively with a diverse population--including students, parents, administrators, and communities in addressing their various needs. His background also includes addressing issues specifically related to student athletes.
Dr. Turner served as Dean of the University of Virginia’s Office of African-American Affairs from 1988 until his retirement in 2006. During his tenure, the University boosted its African-American graduation rate to 87%-- among the highest of any public institution in the nation. This achievement is a direct result of Dr. Turner’s leadership and the many successful programs instituted by his office. Prior to coming to UVA, Dr. Turner served in various student affairs leadership positions at institutions across the nation, including the University of Connecticut, University of California-Irvine, and Stanford University.
His doctoral dissertation, “The Academic Achievement and Retention of Black Students in White Institutions,” provided the foundation for Dr. Turner's life’s work. As a speaker and presenter at numerous conferences and a consultant to various entities, he has been a valuable asset to many institutions, organizations, groups, and individuals. His invaluable experience and expertise make Dr. Turner the ideal partner in addressing contemporary issues related to the African-American student.
